Prostitution, love, sex and physical contact: an analysis of discreet practices in Switzerland
(English)
The book went around the world!
Revista Repórter X investigated, in a study published in the book by the author Quelhas, forms of discreet prostitution that have existed in Switzerland for decades, and showed how sex, physical contact and professional affection can coexist with hygiene, autonomy and legality.
Fixed model in one’s own apartment
Women and men use apartments as exclusive spaces for sexual services, with two bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathrooms. One room receives the client while the other is cleaned and prepared, ensuring continuous rotation, hygiene and absolute privacy. Entry is by appointment, avoiding encounters with neighbours or other clients, making each visit a safe and protected moment.
Independent and licensed work
Even without employees, it is possible to obtain a license as a self-employed worker by meeting the cantonal requirements for health, insurance and tax registration. The activity thus becomes legal and protected, preserving confidentiality and autonomy without the need for public exposure.
Flexibility and privacy
This model is only one among many. Another common practice is for the professional to visit the client at home, offering comfort, safety and discretion, always with attention to hygiene as well as physical and emotional care. The activity adapts to each person’s needs, safeguarding the integrity of all involved.
Economic and social motivation
Many resort to this activity to supplement their income or support a lifestyle that a regular salary cannot provide. There is no exploitation by third parties, and confidentiality is a priority. This practice shows the creativity, resilience and autonomy of those who carry it out, transforming necessity into independence.
Historical and social observation
Discreet prostitution has existed for decades in Switzerland and in Portugal. It reveals how necessity, ambition and personal intelligence shape the activity, allowing physical contact, sex and professional affection to coexist with legality, hygiene and social respect.

Footnote:
To carry out legal prostitution activity in Switzerland, it is necessary to:
1. Obtain a license as a self-employed worker from the competent cantonal authorities.
2. Meet public health requirements, including regular medical examinations and compliance with hygiene standards.
3. Register the activity for tax and contribution purposes.
4. Respect local zoning and location regulations, as some cantons impose restrictions regarding proximity to schools, housing complexes or certain streets.
5. Verify whether the premises are authorised for commercial activity; in general there is no specific prohibition regarding ground or upper floors, but each canton may define its own rules on safety, access and client entry.
